How To Protect Your Floors From Summer Sun Damage

Have you ever moved your furniture and noticed that the floor underneath is a different colour than the rest? Sun damage isn’t always noticeable until it’s too late, but luckily, there are a few things you can do to protect your floors from the summer sun:

1. Install new windows

Depending on your budget, buying and installing new windows may not be a realistic option, but it’s one of the most effective ways to protect your floors from the outdoors. New windows often have built-in UV protection and other features to help protect not only your floors, but your furnishings as well.

2. Hang window treatments

If your windows are bare, there’s no way to keep your floors protected from the sun. Consider installing window treatments like blinds and curtains so you can protect your floors on particularly hot and bright days. Bonus: they will help to keep your home cooler as well!

3. Try UV-blocking films

If new windows just aren’t in your budget right now, you can try applying UV-blocking films to your windows. These films are typically adhesive, making them easy to stick to the glass, but won’t negatively impact your home’s natural light.

4. Shades, awnings and landscaping

Sometimes, protecting your floors from the sun starts outside. Installing shades and awnings on your home’s exterior can prevent UV rays and heat from entering your home. For a more natural look, consider planting shade trees on your property near your home.

5. Use area rugs

Area rugs can be lifesavers — particularly for rooms with south-facing windows. Not only do area rugs add style to your rooms and padding for your feet, they also help to protect your floors from the heat and sun. Area rugs are also a lot easier to switch out if they get damaged by the sun compared to replacing your whole floor.
