Spring Cleaning for Your Whole Home

Cleaning is a necessary evil, and we all have to do it. And the best way to tackle spring cleaning is to do it before the nice weather really starts, so you don’t mind being inside! So break out the duster and mop and set aside a weekend to really clean your Guelph home. It’ll pay off in the long run.

• Dusting

Start with dusting, so any residual dust can settle on your floors before you clean them. Dust things like blinds, shelves, vents, mouldings, light fixtures and ceiling fans. Dust the tops of your kitchen cabinets, as well as picture frames on the wall and TVs and other electronics. Make sure you are really detailed with your dusting, and get all the areas you usually forget about (or avoid!).

• Washing

Now’s a great time to wash things like your curtains, including your shower curtain. Wash window treatments according to their labels, and if you have a plastic shower curtain, wipe it rigorously with a cloth. Shower curtains can be hotspots for mould and mildew build up, and having a clean shower curtain will also help you maintain your shower floor and tile!

• Clean carpets

Give your carpets a good vacuum – take this time to move furniture out of the way to get to hard-to-reach places, like under and behind your bed and couch. The dust that lingers and builds up down there can really contribute to allergies. Get your carpets shampooed, but remember to always use the manufacturer-recommended cleaner for your carpet. And don’t forget to vacuum and wash rugs too!

• Kitchen

Take everything out of your kitchen cabinets and throw out anything that’s gone past its use-by date over the winter. Wipe down the insides of your cupboards, do the same in your fridge, then give your kitchen floor a good scrubbing! If you have hardwood floors in your kitchen, remember to be careful not to oversaturate your mop with water, otherwise it will warp and distort. If you have tiles, make sure you’re using a neutral pH cleaner. And if you have granite countertops, consider getting them re-sealed after you’ve cleaned any stains.

• Evaluate

Cleaning your home is a great way to really uncover places you don’t see day-to-day. Take this opportunity to evaluate whether appliances need to be replaced, carpets are stained beyond cleaning, wood floors need to be refinished, or if any tiles in your bathroom or kitchen are cracked and need to be replaced.
