Which Direction to Run Your Wood Flooring

Home / Flooring for Guelph homeowners / Which Direction to Run Your Wood Flooring

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a hardwood floor, and one of these is the direction your wood flooring planks will be laid. So how do you decide?

One consideration is sightlines. Usually, people prefer to run their wood flooring boards from the entrance of a room toward the opposite wall. This adds a nice visual to the room and also makes it look sleeker.

The main factor that will determine your wood flooring board direction will be your home’s structure: mainly, your floor joists. We recommend installing flooring boards perpendicular to your floor joists, but older homes can usually support floor boards that run parallel to the joists.

You should also take into account that the walls in your home might not be straight, especially in older homes.

Diagonal floor boards are an excellent choice because they are just as stable as perpendicular boards, but they create a more interesting visual effect. This kind of installation will, however, usually require more work and more wood.
