Choosing the Right Floor for Your Stairs

Home / Carpet Flooring / Choosing the Right Floor for Your Stairs

When people think about the flooring in their homes, it’s easy to overlook the stairs. You use them every day, usually multiple times a day, and yet they still somehow go under the radar. Choosing the right floor for your stairs is important though, and you have options!

Carpet
Carpet is one of the most common choices for stairs. It might seem like a boring choice, but it has many benefits! Carpet works great because you can match it to your upstairs or downstairs carpeting for a smooth transition. It’s also really soft underfoot, which is just what our feet need after a long day as we head up to bed! And it offers better traction than other flooring.

Wood
If you have a lot of wood in your house, especially in the rooms at the top and bottom of your stairs, then wood is also a great choice for staircases. Wood is always a classic look, and it’s easy to clean–which is essential for staircases! Wood might not be a great choice for stairs if you have small children or older people in your house, because it has the potential for slipping. But if you’re looking for something that’s timeless and beautiful, wood’s the way to go.

Carpet Runner
If you want the softness of carpet and the beauty of hardwood, it’s easy to get the best of both worlds! Try hardwood stairs with a carpet runner down the middle. It will also make the staircase slip resistant.

Laminate
As always, we recommend laminate flooring as a cost effective alternative to hardwood. It’s particularly good for stairs because of its durability, because those things get a lot of use!

Tile
Most people don’t think of tile when they think of staircases, but more and more people are choosing tile for their stairs. Tile can be used for stairs in a number of different ways, but our favourite is as an accent! Choose brightly coloured, intricately patterned tiles for the vertical part of the steps to create a dramatic focal point for your home.

We hope we’ve opened your eyes to some of the great ways you can cover your stairs!
