Carpet Colours That Conceal

Carpeting is a popular choice for many homes because it’s comfortable and warm. When it comes to low-maintenance options for high-traffic areas, choose carpets that blend warm and cool tones together, and consider textures with loops and cuts. These features help play with light making dirt and stains less noticeable than on a solid-coloured surface.

Rustic and Reliable Wood, Laminate, and Vinyl

Hardwood flooring offers a timeless elegance, but it requires careful consideration to ensure low maintenance. Light to mid-tones are best for wood — choose an option that isn’t too dark or too light. Avoid maple, for example, since it is a softer grain, unless it has been hand-scraped or wire-brushed for a distressed finish. A distressed look can help to hide scratches and dirt, and it adds character.

Laminate and luxury vinyl options can provide a similar aesthetic, with added durability. It’s easier to create a rustic look with these flooring styles, and you can have more styles to pick from.

Durable and Stylish Tile

Tile flooring is another excellent option for areas with high traffic or potential for spills. When choosing tile, aim for mid-tone colours and patterns with movement, such as streaks or lines, to help hide debris and pet hair. Surface texture on the actual tile, including roughness or grooves can also contribute to a low-maintenance routine.

Other Home Factors To Consider

When selecting flooring, consider the space’s function, traffic level, and whether you have pets or children. Patterns and designs, like herringbone or smaller formats, can add an extra layer of camouflage against dirt and wear.

Several years ago I had a grey vinyl tile floor from Bigelow installed in my farmhouse mudroom and just love it. Lots of mud, chaff ,and grass tracked in, as well as dog hair and despite that, it looks pretty respectable (most of the time.) A quick sweep is all it takes to maintain. Had some initial problems with installation but the company sorted it all out at no extra cost to me. Would definitely recommend them. Great products, great service.
