Moving out of your old house and into a new home can be stressful, but being prepared can help alleviate some of that anxiety.

1. Install Doormats
The last thing you should remove from your old home and the first thing you should set up in your new home is doormats. Moving means constant foot traffic, tracking dust and dirt onto your floors, and placing doormats at the entrances can help to curb this mess. Doormats can also help to prevent accidents; if it’s raining or muddy outside, you or your movers could slip if the floor becomes wet or shoes become caked in mud.
2. Use Old Rugs Or Runners
Many people decide to buy new rugs or runners for their new homes, especially if the old ones don’t fit the size or aesthetic of the new house. If you’re planning on throwing out your old rugs, hang onto them for the move and use them in high traffic areas while your furniture and other items are being unloaded into your new home.
3. Get Furniture Sliders
Furniture sliders can be lifesavers during a move. They can help protect your and your movers’ backs from heavy lifting. They can also protect your floors from bumps and scuffs that can occur from moving or dragging furniture, as long as the wheels are clean and roll smoothly.
4. Use Cardboard
If you don’t have furniture sliders, cardboard is a good backup plan. You can cut pieces of cardboard and attach them to the bottom of your furniture, such as couch legs. It won’t be as smooth as a furniture slider but it’s a better option than nothing! You can also use cardboard in carpeted areas of your home by covering the carpet itself, just make sure you secure it properly to prevent accidents.
