When to Refinish Hardwood

Home / Flooring Installation / When to Refinish Hardwood

Whether you’ve just moved into an older home and inherited an old, beat up hardwood floor, or have had your own hardwood floor for more years than you can remember, it may be time to get your floor refinished. Here are some tips and tricks so that you can tell when it’s time for freshening up your floor.

• Scratches
Your hardwood floor is bound to get scratched, but you don’t need to refinish them at the first sign of a scratch–besides, a certain amount of scratches can add character to a floor. But when your floor is looking really beat up, it might be time to refinish it. This will happen at a faster rate if you have pets, children or lots of traffic in certain areas.

• Dullness
Unless you have a matte finish on your hardwood floor, it probably has a bit of shine to it. Over time, the shine starts to fade as the top layer of finish gets worn down. If your hardwood floor is starting to look especially dull, consider a refinish.

• Discolouring
Is your hardwood floor a little less bright than it used to be? Does it get a lot of sun exposure that’s causing the colour to fade? Or maybe years of dirt and dust have made it a little darker than it used to be. Whatever the cause, discolouration is a sure sign that your hardwood floor needs to be refinished.
