• Above grade: the portion of a home that’s above ground
• Below grade: the portion of a home that’s below ground (like a basement)
• Beveled edge: the angular edge of end treatment on flooring
• Blooming: a natural phenomenon that occurs during the process of linoleum
• Engineered: describes a type of hardwood floor manufactured from multiple layers of solid wood
• Finish: the surface coating on pre-finished flooring
• Gloss level: the sheen of the floor (gloss, semi-gloss, satin, matte)
• Hand-scraped: describes a type of hardwood sculpted by hand to create a one-of-a-kind floor
• On-grade: the portion of a home sitting right at ground level
• Plank: hardwood boards that are 3 inches wide or more
• Substrate: the smooth surface underneath a floor covering (concrete, underlayment, etc.)
• Warping: the distortion of a piece of flooring that causes it to become curved or bent
