When it comes to keeping your home looking fresh and tidy, having clean floors is essential. But it’s not just about keeping up appearances – keeping your floors clean is important in maintaining their quality and extending their lifespan. How often you should clean your floors depends on a number of factors, including what room they’re in and how much traffic they get. Here’s our room-by-room-guide for cleaning your floors.

Kitchen

Your kitchen gets a ton of use, whether you’re a seasoned home chef or not. Between cooking, eating and congregating in the kitchen, it’s one of the rooms in our homes we use most often on a regular basis. So with all of that foot traffic, it’s important to sweep your kitchen floors regularly – basically as often as possible. If you can’t do it daily, at least try to do it twice a week. You should also clean them thoroughly with the appropriate cleaning solution every week.

Bathroom

Similarly with kitchens, it’s a good idea to clean your bathroom floor as often as possible. But it’s not necessary to sweep your bathroom floors multiple times a week, instead make sure to mop them well once a week, paying special attention to areas around the toilet and bath or shower.

Living Room

Depending on the type of floor you have in your living room, you should be cleaning it weekly. If you have carpet, you should vacuum your living room floors once a week. You should also have them steam cleaned or shampooed (depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations) about once a year. For hardwood, laminate or tile, it’s a good idea to sweep or clean with the proper cleaning solution once a week as well. Plus, about every season, it’s a good idea to move the furniture around and clean behind and underneath couches, TV stands and accent chairs, no matter what flooring material you have.

Bedroom

Bedrooms follow a similar cleaning schedule as your living room. For carpet, vacuuming once a week is good practice. Bedroom carpets are not as likely to require regular steam cleaning or shampooing, but you might as well get them steam cleaned once a year when you come to get your living room done.
