Flooring Tips: Decorating Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

With new design trends and fads constantly popping up, it can be hard to choose your decorating style. But some design elements always stay the same, like these decorating mistakes.

1. Furniture too big (or too small) for your room

In your home, your space is probably limited. Don’t overwhelm your living room with huge, chunky couches or your bedroom with a massive sleigh bed if you simply don’t have the space. Choose pieces that still allow your space to have functionality, and enough space to walk around comfortably where you need to. And on the other end of the spectrum, you don’t want to choose furniture that is going to get lost in a cavernous room. Next time you go shopping for furniture, make sure you know the dimensions of the space you’re buying for.

2. Forgetting about lighting

For some of us, lighting is one of the last things we consider when decorating a room or a home, but it should be one of the first things you think about. If you have a lot of natural light in your room, make the most of it and don’t cover it up with bulky furniture or heavy curtains. And if you have to depend a little bit more on artificial light, make sure you’re placing the lights where they’ll be most needed and most useful.

3. Matchy-matchy

One of the most fun parts about interior decorating is being able to mix and match pieces to create your own style – but it can also be the most challenging. Try to avoid the safety of buying matching sets of furniture and instead experiment with pieces that complement each other. This is a great way to decorate especially if you’ve inherited antiques from your family. Instead of sticking out like a sore thumb, they’ll blend seamlessly with the rest of your design aesthetic.

4. Painting a room without testing the colour

The colour of your walls sets the tone for your whole space, so don’t make the mistake of not testing your paint colours before you paint the whole room. Not all paint colours will look the same as they do on the paint swatch – paint colours look different in different lighting and on larger surfaces. If you find a colour you like, test it out by painting a 1×1’ square on one of the walls in your space. This way, you’ll know whether you need to go lighter or darker or in a completely different direction! And you’ll save yourself a ton of time.

5. Choosing the wrong floor type

Maybe you’ve dreamed of hardwood floors your whole life, or you’ve been eyeing a particular ceramic tile you saw in your friend’s house. But there’s more to choosing a floor than picking the first one you see that you like. You should always consider the function of your room, how much traffic it sees, whether moisture is going to be an issue, and other considerations that are specific to your family’s needs.
